A Latino band in the world of indie rock is not something you see every day. That’s part of what sets reModern apart from its peers.

“There’s a Latin influence in our music that gives it some sentimentality that’s not available in your run-of-the-mill indie music,” said vocalist George Pinto, 29. “It’s very pretty and romantic and a break from the classic, cool sort of rock — we’re putting more personal feeling and emotion in there.”

reModern, with its melodic, guitar-driven songs much like New York’s Interpol, began as a duo in 2004 when bassist Julio Ibarra, 22, and guitarist Andy Aguirre, 22, started writing together. Over the years, Pinto, percussionist John Munoz, 22, and guitarist Francisco Paniagua, 21, joined to round out the lineup.

The band has been working on its debut since March 2007.

“Being a new band, we had a large amount of songs,” Pinto said. “The songs on the album should follow a certain style; we have to filter a large amount of songs that don’t fit what we want our album to be.”

In the meantime, reModern practices three times a week in Hammond, Ind., which can mean a nearly two-hour commute after work during rush hour for Pinto.

“It’s been a year so far since we began making the album, we’re not planning to do that many sacrifices on it,” Pinto said. “We want it to sound the way we want it to sound, so we’ll work as hard as necessary.”
