AFGHAN BOMBING: A suicide bomber wearing a burqa attacked a police patrol at a crowded market in western Afghanistan, killing at least 12 people and wounding 27 others. Provincial Gov. Rohul Amin said the bomber, who struck in Dilaram district in Farah province, was a woman. But the Taliban, which claimed responsibility, identified the bomber as a man.
FATAL PIPELINE FIRE: A road grader accidentally tore open a fuel pipeline in the Nigerian village of Ijegun and sent an inferno raging over houses and a school that in turn set off a stampede of terrified children. About 100 people were killed and 20 injured, the Red Cross said.
