Graduation gifts aren’t what they used to be. The leather-bound dictionary, the savings bond and the clock radio seem as quaint as the strains of “Pomp and Circumstance.”

There’s nothing wrong with a traditional gift, but if you’re looking to give something with a modern twist, we’ve got a list for you:

Traditional

Steamer trunk: This time-honored container can be packed with the trappings of the high school or college years, to be carried over the threshold into adulthood. A great way to wish your grad bon voyage on the journey of life.

Today

A USB flash drive: Hauls around photos of friends, favorite songs, Web site bookmarks and most anything else in a grad’s electronic life. Try fitting a steamer trunk in your back pocket.

Traditional

“Oh, the Places You’ll Go”: Dr. Seuss’ buoyant, whimsical, timeless tome of optimism tells the recipient, “I remember you as a child; I marvel at you as an adult. Go get ’em, Tiger.”

Today

GPS receiver: With directions to millions of ATMs, gas stations, pizza parlors and bars nationwide, a personal navigation device is like having a friend in every city. Great models are available for less than $300. The places you’ll go, indeed.

Traditional

Filofax: The organizer that says, “You’re going to meet a lot of important people along the way. Use your fountain pen to write down their contact information and bundle them in this elegant catchall for adults. In other words, you have arrived, you have crossed the finish line; here’s your prize.”

Today

Smart phone: A Filofax and more that fits into your purse or pocket. In a recent survey of U.S. adults 18 and older, 51 percent said the cell phone would be the hardest communications technology to give up, surpassing the land-line phone.

Traditional

Cash: Giving money tacitly says, “I trust you. I’m sure you’ll use this for something you need. Don’t spend it all in one place.”

Today

Cash: Some things never go out of style.
