The battle of the Davids drew 31.7 million viewers, propelling Wednesday’s “American Idol” finale to one of the show’s biggest audience turnouts ever, according to The Associated Press. Season 2’s Ruben Studdard-Clay Aiken showdown pulled in 38.1 million.
As for the day after, winner David Cook said he was on an adrenaline high after his surprise victory over David Archuleta, the 17-year-old songbird the judges seemed to think would win.
“I’ve gotten absolutely zero hours of sleep,” Cook told “Access Hollywood” on Thursday morning. “I just haven’t been able to shut the brain off. It’s a celebration.”
What’s next for the rocker?
“I think the future is whatever I’m willing to make it,” Cook, 25, said. “I want to put out a record right now that will make the hair on the back of my neck stand up.”
