Doug Davis got more than the usual pats on the back after he was lifted for a pinch-hitter in the eighth. He gave up only one run in seven innings in his first big-league start after cancer surgery.
Barry Zito earned his first win of the season after eight straight losses, pitching the Giants past the Marlins 8-2. He allowed one run and three hits in 6 1/3 innings for his first victory since Sept. 30, 2007.
In a matchup of the AL’s two worst offenses, light-hitting Marco Scutaro did the damage, matching his career high with four RBIs. He’s batting .365 since taking over as Toronto’s shortstop.
THREE DOWN
Brewers shortstop J.J. Hardy bobbled a routine double-play bouncer with one out in the sixth, allowing the Nationals to send six men to the plate and break a 1-1 tie with four unearned runs in a 5-1 win.
Indians starter Fausto Carmona left in the third with a left hip injury. Jorge Julio replaced him and allowed two inherited runners to score plus five more to give the Rangers an 11-3 lead.
The Yankees roughed up Erik Bedard in a 13-2 laugher over the Mariners. Bedard gave up a career-high nine runs and lost a series opener at Yankee Stadium for the second time in three weeks.
