Things I Learned from Knitting

… Whether I Wanted to or Not

By Stephanie Pearl-McPhee (Storey, $10.95)

The author calls herself the Yarn Harlot and believes knitting is a metaphor for life.

If you’re a regular at the MCA’s Stitch ‘n’ Bitch, you probably know all about Pearl-McPhee. In her books and blog, her shtick is the obsessive nature of sticks and yarn. This book offers 45 humorous pearls (purls?) of wisdom.

1. Knitting is good for you. Studies show it lowers blood pressure, promotes relaxation and helps prevent dementia.

2. In knitting as in cooking (and almost everything else), good ingredients are key.

3. The more you knit (or do anything), the better you get.

4. Mistakes can be fixed. When you err with a person (or in that scarf), say you’re sorry (redo it).

5. Knitting teaches patience. “No human can repeat the same action twelve thousand times without some dose of patience.”
