CALIFORNIA FIRES: Firefighters took advantage of cooler temperatures and calmer winds Saturday as they fought a persistent wildfire in California’s Santa Cruz Mountains that has chewed through acres of centuries-old redwoods, destroyed at least 17 homes and displaced hundreds of people.

PYTHON ON THE MEND: A 2-foot-long ball python that was found nailed to a telephone pole in Lawrence, Mass., last week was recovering Friday at Angell Animal Medical Center in Boston. The nails — behind the jaw, through the tail and along the rest of its body — missed all the major organs.
