The Cook County Board put off voting Tuesday on a contract with a health-care agency after two of its nurses recently were charged with criminal neglect in connection with the death of a severely disabled 13-year-old boy.
Commissioner Larry Suffredin (D-Evanston) asked Public Guardian Robert Harris to check that safeguards are in place before a $522,000 nursing services contract for Maxim Healthcare Services is considered.
In addition to speaking to health officials, Harris said his office has subpoenaed hospital, state and county records related to the care and death of the boy.
Suffredin said that unless he can be sure that there are safeguards to ensure quality services, he will “move to kill” the contract with Maxim.
