An 8-year-old Colorado Springs boy burned part of his foot because of an underground patch of “coal spoil” that heated the ground to 800 degrees, authorities said.

Officials plan to cover the waste pile of coal dust, which a geologist said was superheated by sunlight, with about 3 feet of topsoil.
