Woods finishes with 72

Tiger Woods grimaced and pursed his lips, unable to disguise the pain Thursday in the U.S. Open. Nothing torments him like a three-putt to finish a round. There also was pain in his left knee, which he expected, and his first double bogey in 416 holes, which he did not. Woods finished with a 72, the third straight year he has opened a U.S. Open with a round over par.

Stern: Refs don’t manipulate games

David Stern came to the defense of his beleaguered referees again Thursday, saying they don’t manipulate games or engage in other criminal activity. Speaking to the media at an NBA Finals that has been overshadowed by the Tim Donaghy scandal, Stern said Game 6 of the 2002 Western Conference finals might have been officiated poorly, but honestly and not illegally. Donaghy claimed this week that two “company men” worked that game, in which the L.A. Lakers used a huge free-throw advantage in the fourth quarter to avoid elimination against Sacramento.
