4. PRETTY PETAL-ED PILLOW

Felt — in the hands of Mary-Ann Williams of Illu Stration — never looked so good. The German artisan adorns pillows with felt blooms for her award-winning Cappelletti Branch pillows. They’re 15 3/4 inches square and come in 50 other colors.

Cost: $300

5. ICE IT YOURSELF

Inspired both by Kate’s Sculptural Pendant Lamps project, which we saw on designspongeonline.com, and Illu Stration’s pretty pillow (shown at left), we decided to plant our own made-on-the-shade garden of felt. Try it, you’ll like it:

1. Cut out circles of felt (ours are 2 inches in diameter). Pinch them in half and put a dab of hot glue on two opposite edges to hold the fold. Pinch in half again. Put dab of hot glue on the outside of the fold and plant on shade. Repeat, repeat, repeat.

2. Do a little stream of “flowers” or cover the entire shade.

Alternatives: Cover a hanging pendant as seen on designspongeonline.com. Also, instead of cutting out felt circles, use tiny white silk flowers that have been removed from their plastic green stems.

Cost: Felt, 20 cents a sheet at Michael’s (we used 2)

Time: 30 minutes
