VISIT BELARUS: Belarus’ authoritarian President Alexander Lukashenko invited Pope Benedict XVI to the mostly Orthodox former Soviet republic, the presidential press service said. Lukashenko made the offer to Vatican’s No. 2 official, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, who is in Belarus for the consecration of the first Catholic church built in Minsk since 1910.
IMMIGRANT OUTREACH: The French government launched a program to improve immigrant housing projects that erupted in violence in 2005, with plans to boost neighborhood policing and help youths stay in school and find jobs. At least $1.55 billion is reportedly being redirected from other ministries.
