STAYING HOME: As gasoline prices hit a new high Saturday, the American Automobile Association estimated that the number of Americans traveling during the 4th of July holiday period fell for the first time this decade. The national average for regular unleaded was $4.103 Saturday, up almost 3 percent from a month ago and up 39 percent from last year, according to AAA’s Fuel Gauge Report.
NO DAY AT THE BEACH: A popular Long Island beach was evacuated Saturday because unexploded fireworks washed up on shore after Friday night’s show. About 2,000 visitors were ordered to leave New York’s Jones Beach after the leftover shells were found about midday Saturday.
50 TONS OF VINYL: A collection of 78 rpm records — valued at $1 million, weighing 50 tons and representing more than a half-century of U.S. music history — is being donated to Syracuse University by the estate of a New York City record shop owner. The collection of Morton Savada, who died in February at age 85, included recordings from 1895 to the 1950s, with big band, jazz, country, polka as well as several other genres.
