Amount of elephant ivory China’s government lost track of from 1991 to 2002. The “shortfall” in ivory, equal to the tusks from about 11,000 dead elephants, was probably sold on illegal markets, according to a Chinese report to officials of a UN agency on endangered species. China is attempting to gain UN permission to import more ivory.
