Here’s a favorite flower of Debra Phillips, owner of Scentimental Gardens in Geneva.
CLEMATIS STOWIJK GOLD
WHY SHE LOVES IT: This new introduction from Holland has two desirable attributes: exquisite chartreuse foliage and true deep blue pendant flowers. I am always seeking interesting foliage — color and shape. As it climbs up, it creates a beautiful backdrop of gold.
ABOUT CLEMATIS STOWIJK GOLD: It grows to 6 feet high and blooms May to June. It also displays whimsical seed head sprays in autumn.
WHAT IT LIKES: Sun at its head and shade at its feet — as do all clematis. It also likes average soil conditions and has average watering requirements.
TRICKS OF THE TRADE: Always plant any clematis 2 inches deeper than the existing soil level. Also provide sun at its head and underplant at its feet for shade relief.
BEST BUDS: This clematis’ chartreuse foliage would make a dramatic background to the strong dark stalks and leaves of aconitum. Conceal the base of the clematis with a mound of heuchera such as ‘Tiramisu,’ with pink foliage and chartreuse edges. Angelica gigas, with its architectural structure and maroon buds also would contrast nicely.
