Pyrenean mountain dogs (Great Pyrenees) brought into the French Alps to protect sheep from wolves have created problems for summer hikers, attacking and injuring several in recent weeks. Mountain guides have stopped taking clients to certain areas to avoid encounters with aggressive dogs.
2 GREECE
Greek authorities vowed to clean up the tourist scene in seaside resorts after a 20-year-old Australian was beaten to death by bouncers at a Mykonos bar. Much of the resorts’ violence and indecency comes from bar owners serving drinks fortified with industrial alcohol.
3 GERMANY
A five-day strike by Lufthansa staff ended Aug. 1. The airline does not expect its schedule to return to normal until mid-August.
4 GUATEMALA
In late June a van carrying U.S. university students and faculty was robbed by two gunmen in the remote Peten region near the Belize border. All overland travelers are urged to request a security escort from the Guatemala Tourist Assistance Office.
5 ITALY
Some 3,000 troops have been deployed to Italy’s major cities to combat street crime. The soldiers were sent to Rome, Milan, Naples, Bologna, Turin and Palermo to help police patrol the cities’ most frequented public places.
