Delmon Young hit a three-run homer for the second straight day as the Twins beat the Yankees 4-2. Young connected off Darrell Rasner in the fourth to for a 3-1 lead. On Tuesday, he homered off Mariano Rivera.

Kevin Youkilis and the rest of the Red Sox will be sad to see the Rangers’ pitching staff leave Fenway Park. Youkilis hit three doubles, scored three runs and drove in two in an 8-4 win, one night after a two-homer game.

David Purcey, who was born in St. Charles, pitched six innings of shutout ball to earn his second major-league win as the Blue Jays held off the Tigers 4-3. Purcey allowed just two hits and three walks.

THREE DOWN

Luis Gonzalez went 0-for-5 and stranded eight runners in the Marlins’ 6-4 loss to the Cardinals. With two men on in the ninth, Gonzalez popped out to short to end the game. He also flied out three times and hit into a double play.

The Giants’ Barry Zito looked good after five shutout innings, giving up just two hits. However, he hit a wall in the sixth, yielding two hits, four walks and hit a batter while giving up six runs in a 6-2 loss to the Astros.

With Bobby Thigpen’s single-season save record in his sights, the Angels’ Francisco Rodriguez blew a save for just the fifth time in 51 chances. He allowed three runs in a third of an inning against the Mariners.
