State Senate president to retire

Powerful Illinois Senate President Emil Jones Jr. is expected to announce Monday that he soon will retire, sources close to him said Sunday night, which will leave Gov. Blagojevich without one of his closest allies. His decision, not officially confirmed, likely opens a free-for-all to succeed him. Jones long championed more money for schools and education funding reform and made them his top priority as Senate president, a post he has held since 2003.

Teen charged in attack

Police have charged a teenage girl with throwing a caustic substance into the face of 48-year-old woman. Chicago police say they tracked the 16-year-old girl to California and she was extradited to Illinois on Saturday. The girl faces charges of armed robbery and heinous battery. On July 28, police say Esperanza Medina was leaving her house when she was splashed with the substance and severely burned. Officials say the mother of four had third-degree burns over half of her body.

Man falls 2 floors at concert

Even after more than 30 years, fans are still falling for Steely Dan. It happened Saturday night at the Chicago Theatre, when a man trying to slide down a stairwell railing fell two floors during a Steely Dan concert. He was hospitalized in stable condition. Police found the man on the basement floor. Police say he fell from the second floor and hit two other patrons before landing in the basement.
