Athletics: Manager Bob Geren said RHP Sean Gallagher has a tired right arm and will skip his next scheduled start, and RHP Justin Duchscherer will likely do the same. Duchscherer was scheduled for an MRI on Wednesday on his right hip.

Orioles: Purchased the contract of RHP Kam Mickolio from Triple-A Norfolk. He had a 1.50 ERA with two saves in 15 games at Norfolk after being promoted from Double-A Bowie on July 7.

Red Sox: SS Julio Lugo pulled his left quadriceps during some afternoon running, endangering his hopes of an early September return. Lugo severely strained the quad July 11 while running out a grounder but had made good progress.

Royals: Placed pitcher Luke Hochevar on the 15-day disabled list because of a rib injury. The 24-year-old had an MRI, which showed a bruised right rib. … LHP Josh Newman was recalled from Triple-A Omaha.

Twins: Activated 2B Alexi Casilla from the 15-day DL. Casilla has been out since July 29 with a torn ligament in his right thumb. … Assigned RHP Brian Bass outright to Triple-A Rochester.

Yankees: Derek Jeter’s homer in the fourth inning against the Blue Jays was the 203rd of his career, moving him past Bill Dickey and into a tie with Roger Maris for 11th place on the Yankees’ all-time list.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Astros: Claimed INF Jose Castillo off waivers from the Giants.

Braves: Tests show LHP Tom Glavine has no ligament damage in his left elbow, leaving open the possibility he could return next season. Glavine was examined Wednesday by Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala. An MRI exam performed revealed a partial tear to the flexor tendon in Glavine’s elbow. Andrews will perform surgery on the 42-year-old Thursday. … Placed 1B Casey Kotchman on the bereavement list and recalled OF Brandon Jones from Triple-A Richmond. Kotchman learned that his mother had suffered an undisclosed health-related issue. He traveled to Florida to be with her at a St. Petersburg area hospital.

Cardinals: RHP Kyle Lohse was suspended five games for throwing a fastball past the head of Reds pitcher Edinson Volquez last weekend. Lohse appealed the penalty and can continue to play until a hearing is held. … The team decided to plug RHP Adam Wainwright into the rotation instead of as the fill-in closer and will start him Friday against the Braves. Wainwright has been on the disabled list since early June with a ruptured tendon in his right middle finger.

Mets: Signed RHP Al Reyes to a minor-league contract.

Nationals: Acquired SS Anderson Hernandez from the Mets, completing the trade for RHP Luis Ayala.

Phillies: Activated 3B Pedro Feliz (back) from the 15-day disabled list. … Former Cubs LHP Les Walrond was optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Reds: INF Jerry Hairston Jr. went on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right hamstring. … Called up INF Adam Rosales, a Maine South graduate, from Triple-A Louisville. … Released C David Ross.

Rockies: Placed RHP Matt Herges on the 15-day disabled list because of lower back stiffness. … Recalled Ryan Speier from Triple-A Colorado Springs.
