Vietnamese authorities denied Friday that they had used force to break up a demonstration by Catholics demanding the return of land that the communists took more than four decades ago.

Hanoi’s police chief said Friday that officers had broken up the demonstration of about 300 people peacefully.

Six people, including two priests, said police had beaten church members gathered Thursday.
