The Desert Institute of Joshua Tree National Park schedules adult classes that enhance the experience of visiting this unique park, renowned for its ancient rock formations and unusual vegetation. Fall and early winter subjects range from “Desert Snakes” (Oct. 5) and “Native Californian Basket Weaving” (Oct. 18-19) to “Basic Desert Survival” (Nov. 23) and “Geology of the San Andreas Fault” (Dec. 7). Gardening, photography, archeology and painting are also covered by the sessions, which last one to two days.

Classes are rated from “easy” to “extreme,” depending on the hiking required. Most are priced at $50-$100 per person, with meals and accommodations not included. Joshua Tree National Park is east of Palm Springs, Calif. (760-367-5535; www.desertinstitute.homestead.com)
