The Red Sox used their new No. 3-4 combination of David Ortiz and Dustin Pedroia to bash the Orioles 14-2. Ortiz had a pair of two run-doubles and Pedroia had five RBIs, including a three-run homer.
Rookies Brandon Moss and Andy LaRoche hit back-to-back home runs to help the Pirates snap a 10-game losing streak in a 3-2 win over the Reds. Pittsburgh was outscored 80-28 during the skid.
Brandon McCarthy pitched six strong innings for his first win in more than 13 months in the Rangers’ 6-4 victory over the Mariners. McCarthy threw 104 pitches, allowing two runs on four hits with four strikeouts.
THREE DOWN
The Marlins’ Matt Lindstrom was the last of nine pitchers to allow at least one run in the Braves’ 16-14 victory. Coming into a tie game in the ninth, Lindstrom allowed two runs in game that featured five blown leads.
Brewers catcher Jason Kendall committed on a throwing error on Jose Reyes’ sacrifice bunt attempt in the 10th, leading to the Mets’ winning run as New York beat wild-card leading Milwaukee 6-5.
Nationals catcher Jesus Flores was carted off with a sprained left ankle after the Phillies’ Chase Utley barreled into him after breaking for the plate on a pickoff throw. X-rays showed no obvious signs of a fracture.
