Despite the absence of 2006 state singles champion Rachael White, who spent the weekend on a college visit, Deerfield swept through the Homewood-Flossmoor squad, knocking off Lyons Township (5-2), West Aurora (6-1) and the host Vikings (7-0).

The remaining pair in the Warriors’ trio of nationally ranked players, Misia Krasowski and Julia Fellerhoff, teamed up for a tough doubles match against Lyons Township’s Elise Woulfe and Tina Harazin, who finished third in state last season. The Deerfield duo won in straight sets (6-4, 7-5).

Defending state champion Neuqua Valley placed seven runners in the top 15 to win the 18-team Hornet-Red Devil Invitational at Katherine Legge Park. Senior Danny Pawola crossed the line in 15:08 for the individual championship, followed by junior teammate Aaron Beattie in 15:25. The Wildcats topped second-place Palatine 32-82.

At the Lions Pride Invitational, Lincoln-Way Central freshman Lukas Verzbicas made quite a debut when he took the individual title by beating runner-up Zach Dahleen of Sandburg by nearly 40 seconds. Verzbicas covered the 3-mile course in 14:35 to lead the Knights to third place behind host Lyons (31 points) and Sandburg (78).

On the girls side, Palatine’s Sarah McIntosh won the Hornet-Red Devil Invitational in 18:04, but it wasn’t enough to pull the Pirates to the team title. Hinsdale Central, led by second-place Elaine Kuckertz and fourth-place Heather Stevens, edged Palatine 42-51 for the meet championship. Lake Park’s Lindsay Flanagan covered the Fenton Early Bird Invitational course in 17:37 to beat the next-best finisher by 1:08 and lead the Lancers to the team title.
