For the Bears’ offensive success to continue in Week 2, offensive coordinator Ron Turner needs to make these adjustments against the Panthers:
1. Involve Devin Hester more.
Hester played only one out of every three offensive snaps against the Colts and was largely irrelevant in the game plan. Show Muhsin Muhammad that Hester not only knows how to line up himself now but can make an impact in the passing game.
2. Throw downfield.
Kyle Orton can do it, just ask. The Panthers might force the issue, but until they do, keep them honest by seeing how far Orton can throw it.
3. Be less predictable on first down.
Against the Colts, the Bears ran on 18 of 24 first downs. It was working, so it’s hard to argue. But that ratio might have to change Sunday against a better run defense.
4. Don’t overuse Matt Forte
The Forte Formula (getting him least 20 touches) worked with Forte carrying 23 times and catching three passes. But it took a physical toll, and backup Kevin Jones looks ready for more if necessary.
5. Keep it simple.
There was nothing fancy against the Colts. Now is no time for the Bears to outsmart themselves. Stick to the plan that worked, but add a few wrinkles within those parameters.
