The amount by which child mortality before the age of 5 has declined from 1990 to 2007, according to the UN Children’s Fund. Citing improvements in basic health care as part of the reason, UNICEF said there were 68 deaths per 1,000 live births around the world in 2007, down from 93 in 1990.
