Emergency landing

A Southwest Airlines jet that left Midway carrying more than 100 passengers made an emergency landing at the South Bend Regional Airport in Indiana on Sunday night after the crew smelled smoke in the cockpit. Flight 1206 was carrying about 100 passengers to Hartford, Conn. The flight reached the airport early Monday. Airport spokesman Kyle Phillips says no injuries were reported.

City worker shot

A City of Chicago worker putting a Denver boot on a vintage Buick was shot in the back Monday after a confrontation with the car’s owner. The 35-year-old revenue worker was hospitalized in serious condition after the attack in the South Chicago neighborhood, police spokeswoman Monique Bond said. Escalating violent crime in the neighborhood has been a major concern for police and the community this year.

United ups bag fee

United Airlines on Monday doubled its fee for a second checked bag to $50, citing volatile fuel prices. United said the $50 one-way fee would apply for tickets bought beginning Tuesday for travel beginning Nov. 10. in the U.S. or to or from Canada, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Travelers in first or business classes, “Premier” frequent fliers, and active-duty military personnel traveling on orders will be exempt.

Biggest in the world

Ronald McDonald House Charities of Chicagoland & Northwest Indiana has purchased land in Streeterville on which the organization plans to build the biggest Ronald McDonald House in the world, the organization announced Monday. The location at 211 E. Grand Ave. will serve families with children at the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, according to a statement. It will open in 2012, the same year the new hospital is scheduled to open nearby.
