HIDDEN AGENDA

World Kitchen cooking classes at Gallery 37 Center

for the Arts, 66 E. Randolph St., 312-742-8497;

cityofchicago.org/tourism/CulturalCenter

Check it out if you … have someone you want to impress with a homemade meal, want to feel a little more comfortable in the kitchen or are interested in learning to prepare some unusual dishes to spice up your normal routine.

The details: The three-hour classes run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays with events currently scheduled through Dec. 6. The theme changes every week, with upcoming class subjects including Moroccan cuisine and a Columbus Day Italian cooking lesson.

Judith Dunbar Hines, culinary director for the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, has 32 years of teaching experience, and she leads hands-on programs to help teach basic cooking skills to both longtime cooks and beginners. Classes are limited to 21 people, so booking in advance is recommended, though they’ll keep a waiting list in case you get shut out of one that sounds interesting. Classes tend to be mostly female and serve a wide age range. Because most of the guest chefs, kitchen assistants and dishwashers are volunteers, prices are kept low, at $30 a class.

The payoff: Enjoying a meal made with your new skills.
