The trip from Manhattan in Will County is the last installment in our commute calculator feature. All summer in the Monday Business section, we provided an estimate of the cost of the drive between a suburb and downtown Chicago. We took you to 16 suburbs and found that, yes, it’s usually cheaper to take the train.

Manhattan: About 48 miles

With an average gas price of $4.19, the one-way trip from this southwest suburb will cost you $9.14. A one-way train ride on Metra’s SouthWest line to Union Station would cost $6.10.

Don’t live in Manhattan? Go to chicagotribune.com/gas map, where you can plug in how far you’re traveling and your car’s gas mileage into our calculator.

Note: The fuel figure is based on AAA’s average price of regular gas in Chicago as of Friday, and a vehicle that gets 22 m.p.g. and travels in minimal traffic. The above calculation does not include all the possible variables that would affect the cost of the commute by car or train.
