NFL games in the spring?
NFL owners discussed playing spring preseason games as part of a possible expansion of the regular-season schedule. No action was taken by the owners as they wrapped up their meetings on Wednesday. No change in the regular-season schedule is expected for 2009. “I think the focus was on how do we prepare for the season,” commissioner Roger Goodell said.
Don’t make Shaq angry
Shaquille O’Neal didn’t like the “Hack-a-Shaq” strategy the San Antonio Spurs used in games where they led handily in last season’s playoffs. “The only thing I call cowardly is when you’re up by 10 and do it,” O’Neal told Phoenix radio station KTAR. “That’s a coward move and [Spurs coach Gregg Popovich] knows that, and I’ll make them pay for it.” Shaq shoots 50 percent at the free-throw line.

TOM II dies at 17
TOM II, the Bengal tiger mascot of the University of Memphis, has died. He was 17. TOM, which stands for Tigers Of Memphis, died Wednesday. He was recently diagnosed with cancer during an annual exam. The university plans to replace the tiger. TOM I died in 1992. A memorial is planned at the Tigers’ homecoming game against Southern Miss on Oct. 25.
