The Wolves tied the game with 32 seconds left in regulation and went on to win their fourth straight with a 3-2 shootout victory over the Manchester Monarchs at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Sunday. Wolves goalie Robert Gherson stopped 30 of 32 shots in the game and all four Monarchs attempts in the shootout.
Illinois 62, Lewis 56
Mike Davis scored 18 points off the bench and Demetri McCamey added 16 to lead Illinois to a 62-56 victory over Lewis in exhibition play. Illinois opens regular-season play Friday at home against Eastern Washington.
No. 9 Notre Dame 79, Stonehill 47
Luke Harangody had 21 points and 10 rebounds and Tory Jackson added 15 points to lead ninth-ranked Notre Dame to a 79-47 win Sunday over Stonehill in the Irish’s final exhibition game.

Venus wins in finale
Venus Williams rallied to win the WTA’s Sony Ericsson Championships for the first time, defeating Vera Zvonareva 6-7 (5), 6-0, 6-2 on Sunday at the season-ending event. Williams won $1.34 million at the event, which for the first time offered the same prize money as the men at the ATP’s season-ending Masters Cup.

JJ closes in on title
Jimmie Johnson moved inches away from his record-tying third consecutive NASCAR championship with a dominating victory Sunday at Phoenix International Raceway. Johnson heads to next week’s season finale needing to finish 35th or better to clinch the title.

Dragovic released
UCLA junior forward Nikola Dragovic was released on bail Saturday, a day after being arrested on suspicion of pushing his former live-in girlfriend during a dispute. Dragovic, 20, of Belgrade, Serbia, was taken into custody and booked on suspicion of misdemeanor battery. He was released after posting $20,000 bail, L.A. County Sheriff’s Department records showed.
