Pedroia is AL MVP

Boston’s Dustin Pedroia (left) won the AL MVP award Tuesday, becoming the first second baseman to earn the honor in nearly a half-century. He easily beat out Minnesota slugger Justin Morneau and added to his ever-expanding trophy case.

Holyfield pursues record

Evander Holyfield is returning to the ring at age 46, setting his sights on becoming undisputed heavyweight champ again. He will fight 7-foot WBA champ Nikolai Valuev on Dec. 20. A victory will make him the oldest man to claim a world heavyweight title and the first to win it five times.

Player charged with rape

Authorities say a Mississippi State tennis player has been arrested and charged with raping a 20-year-old woman during a party at his apartment. Police say Christopher Richard Doerr, who is from London, was released from jail Tuesday after posting a $50,500 bond. The 20-year-old junior also faces a charge of furnishing beer to a minor.
