Shiso
449 W. North Ave. 312-649-1234
We’re not sure if it’s coincidence or savvy planning, but it seems as if every other spot that opened this month was a BYOB — and there’s nothing like a BYOB when you’re trying to save a few bucks. Week-old Shiso, a 33-seat Old Town BYOB, is the latest addition. Look for a lineup of nigiri, sashimi and maki, plus cookedfare such as hibachi shrimp and grilled sirloin with Japanese-style steak sauce.
The Meatloaf Bakery
2464 N. Clark St. 773-698-6667
How’s this for a twist? Instead of the usual meat-that-looks-like-a-loaf, the owner and chief meatloaf-maker of this just-opened carryout-focused spot, Cynthia Kallile, shapes her meatloaf to look like baked goods such as cupcakes, cakes, piesand tarts.
Estrella Negra
2346 W. Fullerton Ave. 773-616-5811
This arty little cafe-slash-gallery on the Bucktown-Logan Square border serves a smallish menu of contemporary Latin cuisine alongside a smorgasbord of local art. The casual dining room and bar area is decked out in a colorful assortment of Dia de los Muertos-themed works. Owner Otoniel Michel’s mom is in the kitchen, so you’ll find family specialties on the menu, including her tamales and chicken pozole. Estrella Negra is BYOB for now.
Milwood Pizza Burgers & More
1360 N. Milwaukee Ave. 773-772-6000
In case the name didn’t give it away, this weeks-old Wicker Park quick-serve specializes in made-to-order burgers and thin-crust, brick-oven pizza by the slice or whole pie. The “more” comes into play with appetizers, salads, sandwiches and desserts.
Oak Tree Restaurant & Bakery
900 North Michigan building, 6th Floor. 312-751-1988
Attention, holiday shoppers! This Mag Mile mainstay, which closed for a face-lift this summer, reopened just in time for the holiday rush. You won’t recognize the new interior, and the menu underwent a transformation too. Perennial best sellers remain, but you’ll find plenty of new additions, including an expanded sandwich menu. There’s also a newbakery where you can score muffins, breads and more.
