Word of the week: Year-end edition
It’s been a long, hard year full of new phrases and weird words. Here’s a look at a few favorites from the New York Times’ annual list of buzzwords.
Caribou Barbie: Nickname for Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin
In context: Gov. Palin’s wardrobe at the convention was sooooooo Caribou Barbie.
Fail: A massive mishandling of something on the Internet. Also seen as “epic fail” and “bucket of fail.”
In context: FAIL!
Joe: The everyday guy — as in Joe the Plumber and Joe Six-Pack.
In context: Hey, Joe!
Staycation: Broke? Take a vacation where you don’t go anywhere.
In context: Last year, I went to Grand Bahama Island. This year, I staycationed in Grant Park.
Hockey mom: The everyday mom — as in Sarah Palin.
In context: You know what they say about hockey moms … yada, yada, yada.
Recessionista: One who once burned money on clothes and bags and now just puts it on her credit card.
In context: All the recessionistas have traded Tiffany’s for Target.
