New year, new resolutions. I resolve to actually give the Cubs a chance, because of the moves they’ve made.
Break it down. Jason Marquis … gone. Addition by subtraction, I say — regardless of whom you get. I see it’s Luis Vizcaino. Never heard of him. That moves Sean Marshall into the rotation (good) and frees up some cash for better players (also good). Those are: Aaron Miles (yeah!) and Milton Bradley. I don’t trust the Bradley thing. The guy is named after a maker of board games, and every time I see him, I just want to yell Sorry! (Bad board game reference — my apologies).
We say goodbye to Mark DeRosa — because of his versatility, that’s saying goodbye to half the team. He and Kerry Wood can talk about how boring Cleveland is in 2009.
The downside is I hear the names Jake Peavy and Brian Roberts — again! I’m so tired of these names that by the time we actually get these players, it’ll be time too unload them to another team. Enough!
Other resolutions. I resolve that, regardless of the Winter Classic, to respect the Blackhawks for the way they got after it this year. In fact, they’ve reminded me how much I hate Detroit again, and that’s important as I watch that town go bankrupt.
I resolve to refuse to like the Bulls until they get rid of some lazy, no-good players. Sorry, I love Derrick Rose, but Joakim Noah needs to go, as does Larry Hughes and Tyrus Thomas. I see they’re fined for conduct detrimental to the team — namely, being on the team. No wonder Scott Skiles and Jim Boylan left with smiles on their faces.
I also resolve to completely re-examine my relationship with the Bears. No more breaks. Either fix your quarterback, get a No. 1 receiver and overhaul your defense, or hit the bricks.
Oh, and by overhauling your defense, I don’t mean hiring the coach of the 0-16 Detroit Lions as your D-coordinator. I don’t think we want any Lions DNA at this point.
I need my head re-examined — remind me to do that sometime in 2009.
