The only thing odder than hockey at Wrigley might have been NBC’s coverage at times of the Winter Classic. Check out the evidence.
– Bob Costas mangling Cubs broadcaster Harry Caray’s famous home-run call — “It might be … it could be … it IS!” — during a break in action while the crew determined if Detroit had scored a goal.
– This wasn’t NBC’s fault, but the network did highlight the awkward, hockey version stretch of the “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” sing-along, with altered lyrics such as “1 … 2 … 3 pucks your out.” Uhh, what does that mean?
– It took 2 hours and 45 minutes, but Steve Bartman’s name came up. Why? No reason for it.
– There was a serious discussion about Red Wings goalie Ty Conklin taking a “potty break” during a stop in play. TMI!
