St. Joe’s Pingatore ties victories mark
Gene Pingatore tied the state record for career boys basketball coaching victories when St. Joseph defeated Evanston 69-53 Saturday night. Pingatore earned his 826th victory (273 losses) to tie Dick Van Scyoc (826-399), who retired from Peoria Manual in 1994 after a 44-year, three-school coaching career. Pingatore can break the record Friday when his team visits Carmel in an East Suburban Catholic clash. Against Evanston, senior center Lewis Green’s 31 points led the way for St. Joe (12-3), while forward Mantas Dubauskas added 14 points and guard Nate Rogers 11. For the Wildkits (7-7), sophomore guard Garrett Jones scored 15 points and guards Ryan Frazier-Chambers and Isiah Irving chipped in 13 apiece.
No. 4 Warren 62, Conant 43: After Conant pulled within 44-40, Warren ended the game with an 18-3 run to cruise to the non-conference victory. Forward James Poliquin dominated on both ends of the floor with a game-high 10 rebounds and hit all seven of his field-goal attempts to finish with 16 points. Brandon Paul added 13 points, four rebounds and four assists for Warren (12-1). Cameron Leavitt scored 17 points and Tim Gilhooly added 14 points for Conant (10-5).
No. 19 Naperville Central 54, Wheaton Warrenville South 46: Fueled by a pair of Danny Ondik three-pointers, Naperville Central (14-1, 5-0 DuPage Valley) jumped to a 9-1 lead and held a 16-point advantage in the third quarter. Wheaton South (8-5, 2-3) used a barrage of three-pointers to trim its deficit to three points with 59 seconds left in the game, but Naperville’s Drew Crawford hit five of six free throws in the final 45 seconds to thwart the comeback. Crawford finished with 19 points and Ondik 14. Dan Phillip led Wheaton with 12 points and Reilly O’Toole had 11.
Proviso West 71, Lake Park 62: Clinging to a 34-32 lead just after halftime, Proviso West (10-5) took control of the nonconference affair with an 18-7 run for a 52-39 advantage after three quarters. But West had to hold off a stubborn Lake Park team that pulled to within seven points four times in the last eight minutes. Guard Dontae Moore scored 11 of his 20 points in the fourth quarter for the Panthers. Forward Robert Covington put the game away with five points in the last two minutes, including a layup with :20 seconds left, and finished with 21 points and five blocks. Guard Danny Baylis led Lake Park (5-10) with 20 points and Matt Druftke added 14.
Crete-Monee 49, Rich South 48: Mario Redmond had 12 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks as Crete-Monee (9-3, 2-1 SICA South) rebounded from Friday night’s loss to No. 8 Rich East. Kentrell King and Josh Humphrey each added 11 points for the winners. Rich South is 8-3, 1-2.
Stevenson 65, Mundelein 63: Jeff Arenson poured in 29 points to lead the Patriots (7-5, 1-3) to the North Suburban Lake victory. Mundelein standout Ben Brust scored five first-half points before suffering an ankle injury just before halftime. He did not return. Mundelein fell to 9-9, 1-4.
Girls
No. 9 Hinsdale Central 47 No. 18 St. Charles North 36: Trailing by seven at the half, St. Charles North (11-5) held Hinsdale Central (18-0) scoreless for the first 6 minutes 2 seconds of the third quarter in an 8-0 run for a one-point lead. But the Red Devils, fueled by junior guard Toni Kokenis, responded with a 13-0 spurt of their own. She scored the first nine points in that span, then fed Adabelle Ekechukwu for two straight layups to open up a 38-26 lead with 2:26 left in the game. Kokenis finished with 23 points and Ekechukwu 10. Katie Delaney, Hinsdale Central’s 5-10 center, held 6-4 Michigan State signee Kelsey Smith to 10 points, more than six below her average.
Oswego 56, No. 15 Waubonsie Valley 48: Katie Ziemnik (19 points), Sanyia Wright (18) and Paige Harmon (12) helped Oswego to the non-conference upset. Waubonsie Valley, which had beaten Upstate Eight foe Elgin by 30 points Friday, dropped to 13-4.
