‘Slumdog Millionaire’
120 minutes
I thought this flick would be another film trying to revive the “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire” sensation. However, I was quite wrong. Jamal Malik (Dev Patel,) is a penniless, uneducated orphan hailing from the slums of Mumbai, and he’s about to win the grand prize on India’s version of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.”
As the night ends, Jamal is arrested by local authorities for suspicion of cheating. When questioned, Jamal explains — in flashbacks — how he knows the answer to each question on the show as a result of incredible, yet brutal, life. We learn the slum boy is driven by mad love and goes on the show hoping to reunite with his childhood friend, Latika (Freida Pinto).
If you’ve seen “Forrest Gump,” you’ll probably like this movie. Danny Boyle directs this amazing film, so if you’ve seen some of his earlier works — “Trainspotting,” “The Beach” — you won’t be disappointed in this touching film, I guarantee it.

‘The Tales of Beedle the Bard’
by J.k. rowling, 111 pages
For many Harry Potter fans, J.K. Rowling’s latest book, “The Tales of Beedle the Bard,” was not her most anticipated.
These stories have a darker and more serious side than most classic fairy tales, but with the same emphasis on lessons learned. These tales are more childish than many of Rowling’s previous works, making them a very easy read. However, they still maintain the quirky humor and the magically-inventive descriptions that have made Rowling so famous.
For fans looking for a quick taste of wizarding culture, it’s the perfect read.

‘The City’
9 p.m. Mondays, mtv
MTV has moved from “The Hills” to “The City” with its new reality show starring Whitney Port. Port arrives in New York and is working for fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg. One cast member we should see often is Erin, Whitney’s friend. Whitney also has a sweetheart named Jay, who’s a musician.
Olivia is Whitney’s co-worker and an uptown socialite. Samantha is a friend Whitney meets through von Furstenberg. I already like this show because I’ve been a fan since “Laguna Beach.” “The City” and “The Hills,” are similar: following a young woman who meets new people, falls in love and encounters drama.
Now that we’re all up to speed on “The City,” let the drama begin!
