*NFL: ESPN and NFL.com reported Wednesday the Raiders have decided to hire interim head coach Tom Cable. Raiders senior executive John Herrera denied the report and said a decision hasn’t been made yet.
*NHL: The Red Wings signed Henrik Zetterberg, 28, to the longest contract in team history, a 12-year deal that will keep the star forward in Detroit until 2021. Additional terms were not disclosed, but Booth Newspapers reported the deal was worth slightly more than $72 million.
*COLLEGES: Bobby Bowden signed a one-year contract Wednesday to coach a 34th season at Florida State. The school’s announcement said Bowden will be paid just under $2.5 million, the same as last year. … Kelvin Sampson, now an assistant with the Bucks in the NBA, confirmed he has appealed the NCAA’s punishment from an infractions case leveled against him when he was coaching Indiana University.

*GOLF: Colin Montgomerie has been selected to be captain of Europe’s team for next year’s Ryder Cup in Wales. Montgomerie, who will be 47 when the competition starts, will be Europe’s youngest captain when the tournament is held in September 2010 at Celtic Manor.
*LAW : A man who says he was shot by Colts receiver Marvin Harrison was convicted of a misdemeanor Wednesday for lying to Philadelphia police about the shooting.
