UConn coach Jim Calhoun missed the Huskies’ 103-47 victory over Chattanooga in the first round of the NCAA tournament Thursday. He was admitted to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in the afternoon and was to remain there overnight for observation.

He is listed in good condition, according to UConn.

“I have been feeling lousy for the past several days and this morning talked to Dr. [Jeff] Anderson about it,” Calhoun said in a statement. “He recommended that I not coach in the game today and stay back at the hotel. As the day went on, he suggested that we go over to the hospital to have some testing done.” Associate head coach George Blaney coached the Huskies Thursday. With only one day off between games, Calhoun’s status is uncertain for a second-round matchup with No. 9 Texas A&M.

Fields fine: Levance Fields didn’t give details, but the key word was “fine” when Pittsburgh’s aggressive point guard was asked about his groin injury.

The injury kept him out of practice for nearly two weeks before he joined his team Wednesday and Thursday in preparation for the top-seeded Panthers’ first-round game Friday against No. 16-seeded East Tennessee State.

“I’m fine,” Fields said. “Whenever I’m on the court, I’m 100 percent.”

Sleek look: Marquette players will sport a smooth new look for Friday’s first-round game against Utah State, having shaved their heads in a demonstration of team unity this week. The trims came courtesy of leading scorer and unofficial team barber Jerel McNeal, who apparently is as skilled with a pair of clippers as he is with the ball in his hands.

“I’m not professional by any stretch — but, you know, I do a little somethin’,” McNeal bragged. AP

Demon shuffle: Scott Wainwright, son of DePaul head coach Jerry Wainwright, resigned from his position as an assistant coach with the program. Wainwright resigned to pursue a coaching opportunity, said his father.
