The Crown Center was “de-commissioned” as a residence Dec. 31 after university officials determined that it would cost more to install the mandatory sprinkler system that the outdated building was worth.

Cost of the 32-story replacement is $130 million. Ground would be broken midsummer with a fall 2011 opening.
