AMERICAN LEAGUE

Tigers 4, Rangers 3: Justin Verlander struck out eight in five innings as five pitchers combined on a two-hitter. Placido Polanco’s double in the sixth provided a 4-3 lead. He scored the tying run in the fifth.

Blue Jays 5, Indians 4: Roy Halladay outpitched Cliff Lee and the Jays withstood a rally in the ninth to drop the Indians to 0-5 for the first time since 1985. They last started 0-6 in 1914, when they were the Naps.

White Sox 8, Twins 0: Bartolo Colon yielded three hits in six innings. Alexei Ramirez and backup catcher Corky Miller each drove in two to snap the White Sox’s three-game skid. Francisco Liriano fell to 0-2.

Mariners 8, Athletics 5: Kenji Johjima’s two-run single in a four-run eighth capped the M’s second rally in their third straight win. Brendan Morrow got the save.

Red Sox 5, Angels 4: Jason Bay homered twice and drove in three, Brad Penny won his AL debut and the Red Sox ended a nine-game skid against the Angels.

Orioles 6, Rays 0: Jeremy Guthrie got the win with six innings of two-hit ball and Melvin Mora clubbed a first-inning grand slam for his first homer as the Orioles moved to 4-1 for the first time since 2000.

Yankees 6, Royals 1: Nick Swisher, who was moved to first base from left field just before the game to replace Mark Teixeira (sore left wrist), homered, tripled and drove in three to back CC Sabathia.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Pirates 10, Reds 2: Ryan Doumit hit his first career grand slam, Nate McLouth added a two-run homer in the first and a run-scoring single in the seventh and Paul Maholm pitched seven innings of three-hit ball.

Cardinals 11, Astros 2: Rick Ankiel and Joe Thurston each had three of the Cardinals’ 19 hits. Roy Oswalt (0-2) allowed six runs and nine hits in six innings. He’d had a 1.83 ERA in five starts at the new Busch.

Mets 8, Marlins 4: Jose Reyes doubled and homered, driving in three, and Livan Hernandez worked 6 2/3 innings for the victory. Luis Castillo had four hits, all singles, and scored three times for the Mets.

Braves 5, Nationals 3: Kenshin Kawakami, the first Japanese-born player in Braves history, got the win with eight strikeouts in six innings. Kelly Johnson, whose hit won Friday’s game, was 3-for-4 with three RBIs.

Cubs 6, Brewers 5: Alfonso Soriano’s two-run homer in the top of the ninth off Carlos Villanueva won it for the Cubs, who used Carlos Marmol, not Kevin Gregg, to close the game. Gregg blew the save on Friday.

Dodgers 11, Diamondbacks 2: Eric Stults, filling in for Hiroki Kuroda (oblique), pitched 5 1/3 innings for the win. Orlando Hudson had a homer, double and three RBIs.

Phillies 8, Rockies 4: Brett Myers stayed perfect at Coors Field (5-0) and vs. the Rockies (7-0) despite allowing three homers among just four hits. He also allowed three in his first start, a 4-1 loss to Atlanta.

Giants at Padres: Padres starter Jake Peavy had a 1.74 ERA at PETCO in ’08 but was just 5-5 in 14 starts.
