*TENNIS: Stanislas Wawrinka gave his good friend and Olympics doubles partner Roger Federer an early exit from the Monte Carlo Masters in Monaco, beating him 6-4, 7-5 Thursday in the third round. The 13th-seeded Wawrinka will next face qualifier Andreas Beck, a 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 winner over Juan Monaco. Third-seeded Novak Djokovic advanced to face No. 7 Fernando Verdasco by beating Albert Montanes 6-1, 7-6 (4), 6-0. Verdasco beat No. 10 David Ferrer 6-2, 6-1. … In Charleston, S.C., second-seeded Venus Williams was upset in the third round of the Family Circle Cup, falling to 63rd-ranked Sabine Lisicki 6-4, 7-6 (5). Top seed Elena Dementieva, ranked No. 3, defeated Varvara Lepchenko 6-1, 6-1. … The International Tennis Hall of Fame will celebrate the 40th anniversary of Australian Rod Laver’s 1969 Grand Slam at its induction ceremony in July. *GOLF: Alex Cejka shot his best round in nearly two years, a 7-under 64, to take a one-stroke lead at the Verizon Heritage in Hilton Head Island, S.C. He’s one shot ahead of two-time U.S. Open champion Lee Janzen and two in front of last year’s Masters winner, Trevor Immelman. Only six of the world’s top 20 are playing this week.

*COLLEGES: Jerrance Howard, a key contact with Chicago-area recruits, said he turned down an offer to become associate head basketball coach at Memphis and is staying at Illinois, where his recruiting has drawn national attention. … Illinois and Cincinnati have moved their football game up a day to Friday, Nov. 27, the day after Thanksgiving. … Penn State and Rutgers will renew their football rivalry, with the Nittany Lions traveling to Rutgers in 2014 and hosting in 2015. … Courtney Kupets posted her fifth perfect score of the season, in the balance beam, and matched the highest all-around score of all time to lead four-time defending champion Georgia to the team finals at the NCAA women’s gymnastics championships in Lincoln, Neb. *HORSE RACING: Three-year-old colt Mafaaz won’t run in the Kentucky Derby despite clinching a spot by winning the Kentucky Derby Challenge in England last month.

*MOTORSPORTS: McLaren chief executive Ron Dennis relinquished all Formula One roles amid fallout from a lying scandal that could lead to the team being banned from the world championship. He will become executive chairman of McLaren Automotive. Martin Whitmarsh will take on the CEO role. … A federal jury reached a partial verdict in the tax-evasion trial of Helio Castroneves in Miami but was hung up on several counts. Federal Judge Donald Graham said he would not immediately read the verdicts on two tax-evasion counts and told jurors to continue deliberating on four other tax evasion counts and one conspiracy count.

*ALSO: World champion Evan Lysacek finished second in the men’s short program behind France’s Brian Joubert to help the U.S. into the lead after Day 1 at the World Team Trophy in Tokyo. The U.S. has 48 points, followed by Japan (43) and Canada (39). … The Minnesota Wild announced that the team’s original general manager, Doug Risebrough, would not return next season, less than a week after coach Jacques Lemaire resigned. … Lance Armstrong has told organizers he will race in the May 9-31 Giro d’Italia in Milan despite having surgery on a broken right collarbone March 25.
