Girls soccer
Several of the area’s top teams will continue to compete in the first weekend of the Naperville Invitational, which began Thursday and runs through May 2. Neuqua Valley, led by goalkeeper/forward Alexa Gaul, headlines the 16-team field, which includes co-host Waubonsie Valley, Naperville Central, Wheaton Warrenville South, New Trier and Naperville North.
Softball
Eight area teams headed to the Elgin Sports Complex for Saturday’s Larkin Slugfest. First-round pairings include defending Class 4A champion Lincoln-Way Central vs. No. 8 seed Hersey, No. 2 Plainfield Central vs. No. 7 Queen of Peace, No. 3 Palatine vs. No. 6 Oak Lawn, and No. 5 Larkin vs. No. 4 Chatham-Glenwood. Games begin at 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m.
Boys volleyball
Marist, Providence, Reavis St. Francis and Sandburg join host Brother Rice at the first Smack Attack Invitational on Friday and Saturday. In addition to Brother Rice, games will be played at Mother McAuley and St. Xavier University. The nine-school field includes teams from Metuchen (N.J.) St. Joseph, Boca Raton (Fla.) Spanish River and St. Louis (Mo.) Christian Brothers.
Track and field
In boys action, Downers Grove South hosts a meet that will include York and Neuqua Valley on Friday. … Wheaton Warrenville South, Highland Park and Tinley Park are among other schools holding meets Friday. … The Batavia girls stay at home Friday for an invitational. … Waubonsie Valley will travel to Glenbard East on Saturday, while Barrington and Hinsdale Central head to Glenbard West.
