Chicago teams have played host to some momentous Game 6’s throughout the years. Here are some of the more memorable ones.
Florida 8, Cubs 3
NL Championship Series
Oct. 14, 2003, at Wrigley Field
The World Series was just five outs away. Then, with the Cubs nursing a 3-0 lead and the Marlins batting in the eighth, a foul ball soars into history. Steve Bartman reaches for the ball in the left-field stands, possibly preventing Moises Alou from catching it and getting a precious out. The Marlins go on to score eight runs and win the series 4-3. A new curse is born.
Bulls 128, Boston 127 (3OT)
NBA Playoffs: Round 1
April 30 at United Center
The upstart Bulls take the defending champs to the brink, forcing a Game 7 with an epic win that included big shot after big shot, Joakim Noah’s steal-drive-and-dunk, and Rajon Rondo and Kirk Hinrich imitating the WWE.
Bulls 97, Portland 93
NBA Finals
June 14, 1992, at Chicago Stadium
The Bulls rally from a 15-point fourth-quarter deficit thanks in part to — who else? — Michael Jordan. It was the biggest fourth-quarter comeback in finals history and ended with Jordan celebrating with a makeshift dance on the scorer’s table. Those were the days.
Blackhawks 4, Calgary 1
NHL Playoffs: Round 1
April 27 at Calgary
This game is memorable not because it featured heart-stopping moments or unbelievable shots, but because it brought the Hawks back from hockey obscurity and sent them to the second round. It also was the coming-out party for a young team that could be playoff contenders for years. Oops, now we’ve jinxed it.
