Twenty-one percent of the calories Americans consume every day come from beverages — up from 14 percent in 1977 — largely from soft drinks, which offer no nutrients.
The Beverage Guidance Panel, an independent group of leading nutrition scholars, has proposed a system, similar to the government’s food pyramid, to guide people to more healthful beverage consumption. While all fluid needs could be met with just water, the panel suggests how to incorporate a variety of beverages healthfully.
