IT WAS A BAD WEEK FOR … the Blackhawks. The hometown hockey team lost 5-2 on Sunday in Game 1 of the Western Conference finals against the Detroit Red Wings. The defending Stanley Cup champion Wings used a stifling defense and pressured Hawks goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin as they drew first blood in the best-of-seven series. The teams met again in Detroit on Tuesday night.
IT WAS A WORSE WEEK FOR … President Obama. His May 17 speech at Notre Dame’s graduation was marked by anti-abortion protests. (Obama supports abortion rights.) Hundreds of protesters gathered on and off campus, about two dozen seniors boycotted graduation and Obama’s speech was interrupted three times. Yet his speech, which addressed finding common ground on abortion, won good reviews.
