Prosecutors on Tuesday charged Scott Roeder, a 51-year-old man with ties to right-wing militia groups, with murder on allegations he killed abortion doctor George Tiller.

The charge carries a maximum sentence of life in prison because the crime does not meet Kansas’ legal requirements for the death penalty, Sedgwick County District Atty. Nola Foulston said. Tiller, 67, was gunned down Sunday at his church here.

Roeder made a brief court appearance via video feed Tuesday. Judge Ben Burgess told him a public defender would be assigned within several days and set the next court appearance — at which Roeder is expected to enter a plea — for June 16.
