Newest White Sox Gordon Beckham, who was drafted eighth overall exactly one year ago Friday, made his major-league debut Thursday after short stays in Double A and Triple A.
This is Beckham’s rather uneventful day (on the field, at least) as the eighth hitter and third baseman at U.S. Cellular Field in a 7-0 loss to Oakland:
First at-bat
Second inning, runners on first and second, one out.
Beckham takes a ball, lines a pitch foul, fouls a pitch back, takes a ball and grounds to third to force Dewayne Wise at second. Beats the potential double-play ball to first.
Second at-bat
Fifth inning, runner on first, no one out.
Beckham looks toward third base, but he is not bunting as he takes a ball. On the second pitch, he lifts a lazy fly ball to center field.
Third at-bat
Seventh inning, no one on base, one out.
Takes a strike and a ball, hits three straight fouls, takes a ball and then strikes out swinging.
Defense
His only clean fielding chance came in the seventh when Rajai Davis shattered his bat while lobbing a ball toward third base. The ball and bat arrived at the same time. Beckham sidestepped the bat with his left leg and caught the ball.
