Daley nephew quits firm

Mayor Daley’s nephew Robert Vanecko has quit a real estate firm he startedwhose city pension business is nowunder federal investigation. The company, DV Urban Realty, announced Vanecko’s resignation Tuesday, less than two weeks after federal prosecutors sent subpoenas to city employee pension funds that invested in DV Urban.

Fast thinking saves fast food

An employee foiled an attempt to steal a meal Monday from the drive-thru at a Wendy’s in Buffalo Grove, police said Tuesday. As a clerk was handing an order to the driver of a van, a person appeared from the shadows and attempted to grab the order, police said, but the clerk held on to the bag. The person ran away, and the van took off simultaneously, police said. “We’re assuming there’s some orchestration,” Cmdr. Steve Husak said.

Former Bear gets probation

Former Chicago Bear Roland Harper was sentenced to a year of house arrest Tuesday for acting as a front man in a $1.5 million fraud involving a landscaping contract for Chicago public schools. A judge also required the 56-year-old former fullback to perform 200 hours of community service and pay $25,000 in restitution and forfeit $50,000. Harper, who was in the same backfield with Walter Payton, pleaded guilty last year to mail fraud.

Will the real Rod please stand up?

Audiences at The Second City’s satirical revue “Rod Blagojevich Superstar” on Saturday night are in for a treat: The real Rod Blagojevich is expected to make an appearance. According tothe show’s producer Kelly Leonard, the indicted and impeached former Illinois governor has been contracted to show up during the show to help announce the extension of the satirical spoof through Aug. 9 (and possibly beyond). Blagojevich also will take part in the improv set that follows the show.
