Luke Martinez, a football player at Glenbard East High School, and his teammates are collecting items to send to troops stationed in Iraq. Items to be collected include baby wipes, sun screen, lip balm, canned tuna and playing cards. Donations may be dropped off in the athletic office at the school, 1014 S. Families with Children from China-Oak Park raised more than $11,000 for Half the Sky, an organization that runs programs benefiting orphans in China, at a recent dinner. Oak Park FCC hosts fundraisers and social events for families who have adopted Chinese children.
Western suburbs
Students from Marmion Academy and Rosary High School will collect donations of new school supplies at local Jewel-Osco stores for the annual Crayons for Kids School Supplies Drive. Donations, in their original packaging — including pencils, crayons, pens, markers, glue, glue sticks, erasers, supply boxes, supply pouches, scissors, rulers, colored pencils, loose leaf paper and folders — will be accepted from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday in Jewel-Osco stores on Main Street in Elburn and on Kirk Road in St. Charles. Also from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m Aug. 15 and Aug. 16 in stores on Eola Road and Galena Boulevard in Aurora; Randall Road in Batavia; Prairie Street in St. Charles; and on Illinois Highway 47 in Sugar Grove. Westmont
Literacy DuPage will conduct volunteer tutor training from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday, Aug. 12, 17, 19, 24 and Sept. 9 in Westmont Public Library, 428 N. Cass Ave. The volunteers will receive comprehensive training preparing for English as a Second Language or adult basic literacy instruction. Registration is required.
